How it works
The Formula, Shown
CAGR = (End ÷ Start)^(1 ÷ t) − 1 CAGR smooths the path. Two investments with the same CAGR can have had very different year-to-year swings.

How is CAGR different from absolute return?
Absolute return ignores time. 150% over 7 years and 150% over 3 years are very different; CAGR makes them comparable.
Can I use CAGR for a SIP?
Not accurately. With several cash flows on different dates the right measure is XIRR, which most fund statements report.
